File Format Tools

These tools may help users to make full use of the files and data we distribute from our web site. Please feel free to let us know of other tools you think should be added to this list. Mention on this page does not imply endorsement by the Kansas Geological Survey.

ZIP archive

We compress TIF and LAS files into ZIP archives. Your browser may be already set up to decompress these files. Commercial software to perform this is available from PKWARE, Inc., the company that invented the format. Other software is available from WinZip. A web page from a group of people creating shareware or public domain software is available at 7-Zip.

Scanned Wireline Logs

The wireline logs on our website are scanned into TIF files and then compressed into ZIP archives to aid in web distribution. You can read these files in a few ways.

We use a Neuralog scanner to create the TIF files. Software to read, print, and interpret the scan is available from Neuralog.
Vizex Reader from Larson Software Technology states it can read TIFF and CGM files.
IrfanView software can be used to view logs, and is offered in a free version.
Exploration mapping programs such as GeoGraphix, Petra, or RockWorks can read the logs and create cross sections and other products.
Microsoft Office Document Imaging is a program included in Microsoft Office. It will read many TIF files, though some of the logs will give problem to some versions of Document Imaging.
Drawing software such as Adobe's Photoshop or Corel's CorelDRAW will read many of the TIF files.

LAS (Log ASCII Standard) files

LAS files are digital versions of wireline logs in a format created by the Canadian Well Logging Society. The files are simple ASCII (text only) files, readable by Microsoft Word, Excel, or Notepad. Software to display or analyze LAS files includes:

The KGS has written an LAS viewer as part of the GEMINI project.
The KGS sells an Excel add-in called PfEFFER for interactive log analysis.
Log Data Toolbox is a set of utilities from Schlumberger that will allow you to read and use LAS or other digital log formats.
Exploration mapping systems and log analysis programs can read and analyze LAS files.

PDF files

To read PDF files, you will need the Acrobat PDF Reader, available free from Adobe.

Text files of well header data

Below is a sample of the kind of well data saved. The columns are explained below the sample data.
If you import this data into Excel, you may want to make sure the LEASE and WELL columns are designated as "TEXT" columns; well numbers like "5-1" can be converted into dates like "MAY-1" by Excel.

KID	Unique ID assigned by the Survey. Not necessarily permanent.
API_NUMBER	API number assigned by the Kansas Corp. Commission, or from historical records.
API_NUM_NODASH	API number, formatted with no dashes.
LEASE	Lease name.
WELL	Well number.
FIELD	Oil and gas field name
LATITUDE	NAD 1927, generated from the legal location.
LONGITUDE	Some new wells have GPS longitude and latitude.
LONG_LAT_SOURCE	May be calculated from footages, quarter calls, or from GPS.
TOWNSHIP	Public Land Survey System township number, 1-35 in Kansas.
TWN_DIR	Township direction. S (south) or N (north), Always south in Kansas
RANGE	Public Land Survey System range number, 1-43 in west and 1-25 in east.
RANGE_DIR	Range direction. E (east) or W (west).
SECTION	The PLSS section the site is located in: 1-36
SPOT	The legal quarter description qualifiers list as NE, NW, SE, and SW, etc..
FEET_NORTH	Distance in feet north from the reference location, negative is to south.
FEET_EAST	Distance in feet east from the reference location, negative is to west.
FOOT_REF	Corner from which the footages is measured.
ORIG_OPERATOR	Operator of the well at drilling completion. Not usually updated except at workover.
CURR_OPERATOR	Updated operator name; may be newer than original operator but not guaranteed to be the current operator.
ELEVATION	The elevation the well, in feet.
ELEV_REF	KB is Kelly bushing, DF is derrick floor, GL is ground level, TOPO is estimate based on digital model.
DEPTH	Total depth of well, not plugged back.
PRODUCE_FORM	Producing formation typed in from completion form or from lease production data.
PERMIT	Permit date.
SPUD	Date of drilling start.
COMPLETION	Date of drilling finish.
PLUGGING	Date well plugged.
MODIFIED	Date this well record was last altered.
OIL_KID	Kansas Geological Survey ID code of the oil production data, in our Lease database.
GAS_KID	Kansas Geological Survey ID code of the gas production data, in our Lease database.
KCC_DOCKET	KCC Docket Number associated with this well.
STATUS	Well status--type of well. Abbreviation list
STATUS2	Additional status info from KCC.
COMMENTS	Information to enhance well data or explain problems.

Production data

The file includes an ID code used by the Kansas Geological Survey called the LEASE_KID. We are saving the Kansas Dept. of Revenue code as column 3. Finally, we have included the "Month" values for saving monthly data. Yearly data is indicated by Month=0; Starting cumulative value indicated by Month=-1. API number is listed if we have tied the production data to our well data.

Pre-1987 cumulative data and monthly volume data is provided under license agreement to the KGS by IHS Energy. As such, it may be reviewed and used for public service and research purposes. It may not be downloaded or used for purposes of re-packaging, reselling or dissemination to third parties.
