- Carbon Storage Assurance Facility Enterprise (CarbonSAFE)
- Phase I: ICKan (Integrated CCS for Kansas) Integrated CCS Pre-Feasibility Study in response to DOE-NETL FOA 1584 titled, Carbon Storage Assurance Facility Enterprise (CarbonSAFE). The goal of Phase I activity under CarbonSAFE is to identify and critically evaluate challenges and opportunities for commercial-scale Carbon Capture and Storage (CCS) in Kansas, ICKan (Integrated CCS for Kansas).
- Phase II: Integrated Midcontinent Stacked Carbon Storage Hub The Integrated Midcontinent Stacked Storage Carbon Hub (IMSCS HUB) builds on lessons learned from the US Department of Energy (DOE) National Energy Technology Laboratory's (NETL) Regional Carbon Sequestration Partnerships (RCSPs). This program is the first large-scale project for the midcontinent and represents an important step forward in storage scale, exceeding the 50 million tonne (Mt) safe storage objective identified in DE-FOA-0001450.
- Carbon Utilization and Storage Partnership (CUSP)
- The purpose of the CUSP is to advance existing CCUS (Carbon Capture, Utilization, and Storage) research and development by addressing key technical challenges; facilitating data collection, sharing, and analysis; evaluating regional infrastructure; and promoting regional technology transfer.
- Fluid Inclusion Laboratory
- The Fluid Inclusion Laboratory researches micro-scale fluids trapped within crystals. These fluids can answer many questions related to petroleum exploration and production.

- GeoFabLab makes things geological! We design and build tangible, 3-D models of geology to communicate geological concepts and to help learn new things (that is, "research").

- KansCAL: The Kansas Core Analysis Laboratory
- The Kansas Core Analysis Laboratory is operated as a service to the people and industry of Kansas providing routine and special core analysis to determine rock quality.
Completed Projects
- Gemini Tools
- GEMINI (Geo-Engineering Modeling through INternet Informatics) Project was developed to allow the geologist to seamlessly integrate databases and geological analytical tools across the web. The GEMINI tools require the use of Java. Technical support is not available.
- South-central Kansas CO2 Project
- The proposed study will focus on the Wellington Field, with evaluation of the CO2-EOR potential of its Mississippian chert ("chat") reservoir and the sequestration potential in the underlying Cambro-Ordovician Arbuckle Group saline aquifer.
- Arbuckle Saline Aquifer Modeling
- Prototyping and testing a new volumetric curvature tool for modeling reservoir compartments and leakage pathways in the Arbuckle saline aquifer: Reducing uncertainty in CO2 storage and permanence.
- Unger Field Horizontal Well
- A new horizontal well will be drilled in the Unger field in Marion County, Kansas. The data gathered in the project will be used to evaluate the remaining potential of the Unger field and the use of the drilling technology in other Kansas reservoirs. The lateral will be guided along the crest of a northwest trending anticline located in the southern part of Unger Field using real-time geosteering.
- Micro Scale Nitrogen Rejection Plant
- Demonstration of a low cost 2-tower micro scale N2 rejection system to upgrade low-btu gas from stripper wells
- Mesaverde Tight Gas Sandstone Petrophysical Properties
- A U.S. DOE supported project that samples the Mesaverde tight gas sandstone across six western US basins and measures critical petrophysical properties
- SEISKARST
- Improved Geologic and Engineering Models of Midcontinent Fracture and Karst-Modified Reservoirs using New 3-D Seismic Attributes. Kansas Geological Survey and Allied Geophysical Labs-University of Houston
- NATCARB
- The successor to MICDCARB, NATCARB brings together 5 regional coalitions to explore choices for geologic sequestration of CO2.
- Coalbed Methane Project
- The Kansas Geological Survey's Coalbed Methane Program is designed to provide access to data and to study coal distribution and quality.
- Hugoton Asset Management Project (HAMP)
- A collaboration between the Kansas Geological Survey and industry partners with the primary goals being modeling the Permian gas systems of the Hugoton and Panoma Fields in southwest Kansas and Oklahoma Panhandle and building a digital pools catalogue for the pre-Permian fields in southwest Kansas.
- Field Demonstration of CO2 Miscible Flooding in the Lansing-Kansas City, Central Kansas
- The test focuses on a 10-acre patch in the Hall-Gurney field, about 7 miles southeast of Russell.
- MIDCARB
- MIDCARB is a project that will build a digital spatial database for five states that will allow users to identify the amount of CO2 available for sequestration in relation to a source supply, the geologic security and safety of a sequestration site, the long-term effects on a reservoir, and the cost of compression and transport of CO2 between source and sequestration site.
- GEMINI Project
- GEMINI (Geo-Engineering Modeling through Internet Informatics) is an interactive, integrated Website designed to construct real-time geo-engineering reservoir models.
- CO2 Project
- An Energy Research Center intititive to explore the use of CO2 to enhance oil recovery in Kansas.
- Class 2 Improved Oil Recovery in Mississippian Carbonate Reservoirs of Kansas
- An Energy Research Center project to introduce Kansas producers to potentially useful technologies and to demonstrate these technologies in actual oil field operations.
- Hugoton Project
- An industry-, university- and govenment-funded consortium whose purpose is to develop technology and information to better understand the oil and gas resources of the Hugoton Embayment in southwest Kansas.
- Digital Petroleum Atlas
- A prototype allowing the KGS to display detailed geologic, well, geophysical, and regional information for chosen fields in Kansas. The DPA has several data bases that can be accessed.
